If your nephew never manually saved, then you can load the manual save slot and it should be your original save, but otherwise it is all gone. It only reduces a certain amount of damage (evidently 7 hearts), if you're getting hit by anything that deals less than 7 hearts, you won't take any damage and just lose rupees.
